Shaokyi Amdo
SHAOKYI AMDO
Communications and Public Relations Specialist

Shaokyi Amdo is a communications and public relations specialist. She currently works at SoundCloud; previously she worked at Twitter and at the Entertainment Software Association. She graduated from Vanderbilt University in 2018, where she served on the executive board of Vanderbilt's nationally recognized Alternative Spring Break program. She also co-founded Project YETI in 2017, which uses virtual mentorship to connect Tibetan-Americans pursuing higher education, and served on the planning committee of Machik Weekend 2019 as Community Co-Chair. She lives in Brooklyn with her dog Norbu.

Dr Ian Anderson has worked in the HIV and Sexual Health sector for the last 15 years in Canada, Malawi, and Australia. He is interested in rural medicine, health equity, health systems, and social justice. Ian holds a Fellowship with the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine provisional fellowship of the Chapter of Sexual Health Medicine of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians.​

Canadian Rugby Player

​Olivia Apps (she/her), 25, is the captain of the National Senior Women’s 7s Team and an Olympic silver medalist. A member of the national program since 2016, she made history at the Paris Olympics this past summer by leading her team to become the first Canadian women’s rugby squad to reach an Olympic final. Residing in Victoria, BC, she trains full-time and competes in both rugby 7s and 15s internationally, participating in two Rugby 7s World Cups and two Commonwealth Games. As a leader, Olivia emphasizes team culture through authentic interactions, continually seeking personal growth. In her free time, she enjoys cooking, hiking, and spending time with her dogs and partner, while also pursuing a master’s degree in leadership at Royal Roads University.

Dr. BETTINA APTHEKER
Distinguished Professor & UC Presidential Co-Chair, Feminist Critical Race & Ethnic Studies UC Santa Cruz

Dr. Bettina Aptheker is a pioneering figure in feminist studies and social justice movements in the USA. In the 1960s, she co-led the civil rights protests in Berkeley and was part of the legal defense team for Dr Angela Davis. She became one of the first scholars to develop women's studies programs in the US. In 1976, she joined the faculty at UC Santa Cruz, where she helped start one of the country's earliest women's studies departments and continued teaching until retiring in 2023. She developed influential theoretical frameworks that combined feminist theory with intersectional approaches to race, class, and sexuality. Dr Aptheker has consistently bridged academic theory with practical activism and has written extensively about the connections between feminist theory and social movements. Her writings particularly highlight the experiences and contributions of women of color within feminist movements. Dr Apetheker is an outspoken advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and has worked to incorporate queer theory into feminist scholarship.

Ron Awde

Director, Kawartha Heritage Conservancy

Ron Awde is a graduate of the University of Waterloo with degrees in Environmental Studies and Architecture. From 1986 to 1996, he served as the director and treasurer for the Longview Housing Co-Operative, where he played a key role in converting the building to non-profit housing for seniors. Between 1996 and 1998, Ron was the treasurer and director of the Community AIDS Treatment Information Exchange, a national organization established by Health Canada to help individuals and families affected by AIDS access vital treatment information. Since 2011, he has been a director with the Kawartha Heritage Conservancy, focusing on the protection of natural and heritage landscapes in Ontario's 7,000 square kilometer region. Additionally, Ron has collaborated with Free the Children to establish the Me to We Leadership Centre in Bethany and is a long-time supporter of the organization Machik.

Artist, PhD candidate in Social Justice Education at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (UofT)

Susan Blight (Anishinaabe, Couchiching First Nation) is an interdisciplinary artist working with public art, site-specific intervention, photography, film and social practice. Susan is co-founder of Ogimaa Mikana, an artist collective working to reclaim and rename the roads and landmarks of Anishinaabeg territory with Anishinaabemowin (see billboard below). She is a member of the Indigenous Routes artist collective which works to provide free new media training for Indigenous youth. She is currently a PhD candidate in Social Justice Education at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (UofT) and her dissertation looks at the visual and spatial formations of Anishinaabeg geographies of resistance. Susan is Delaney Chair in Indigenous Visual Culture at OCAD University and an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Arts & Science.

Senior Aerospace Engineer

Dr. Tenzin Choephel is a Senior Aerospace Engineer at Pratt and Whitney, a major jet engine manufacturer based in Connecticut. Tenzin is part of Missions and Vehicle Analysis Division where he conducts aircraft performance and flight mechanics studies for commercial airplanes and helicopters.

Currently, as a flight vehicle performance lead, Tenzin supports the development of Pratt and Whitney’s game-changing geared turbofan (GTF) engines for the Japanese-built Mitsubishi regional jets and the Brazilian-built Embraer regional jets.

​Apart from his daytime job, Tenzin serves as a board member of Tibetan Scientific Society, a non-profitable organization in India that promotes STEM education among Tibetans in exile. The society has organized national-level conferences, science workshops, Buddhism and science dialogues, essay contests etc. Tenzin earned a PhD in Aerospace Engineering from the Pennsylvania State University.  ​

​As an exiled stateless Tibetan settler in Canada, 
Sonam Chokey acknowledges that she has directly benefited from the colonization and genocide of the original caretakers of this land. Where she lives in Tkaronto, the land has been governed by the Dish with One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant and includes the following nations; the Anishinaabe, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee, the Huron-Wendat, and more recently the Mississaugas of the Credit River. The indigenous peoples of Turtle Island are still thriving on this land, and Sonam Chokey is grateful to have a home here. She also commits herself to continue to unlearn and decolonize spaces she occupies and work in solidarity with indigenous peoples in their struggle.

Nancy Dadak
NANCY DADAK
Co-founder and Co-chair, Ocean of Wisdom School

Nancy Dadak’s involvement with Tibetan culture was initially formed via Takster Rinpoche's Tibetan Cultural Center. After moving to Minnesota in 1995, she joined Thupten Dadak to create the nonprofit Tibetan Education Action (TEA), which worked with local Tibetans in Tingri, Tibet, to build the first school in the area, offering basic education and Tibetan language to village girls and boys. TEA has also helped numerous Tibetan students in Nepal, Tibet, and India. She has long worked with others to produce Tibetan educational events, exhibits, monks’ and nuns’ tours, and other programming in Minnesota and across the US.

Nancy is wholeheartedly committed to the collective work of creating the Ocean of Wisdom School, which will be the first K-8 charter school in the USA to offer Tibetan language and a full incorporation of Emory University’s and the Social, Emotional and Ethical Learning curriculum. The school is poised to open in Fall 2025 to educate the hearts, minds, and characters of students and inspire others to create similar schools.

Kalden Rangdröl Dhatsenpa is a Tibetan writer/photographer based in Karonhiatsi’kowáhne/Longueuil. Kalden is an editor and columnist at Canadian Dimension, the host of CUTV’s Metropolis, and sometimes runs as a federal candidate for the NDP in Longueuil–Charles-Lemoyne.

Lhamo Dolkar is a nurse practitioner (NP) at Lakeridge Health GAIN clinic, dedicated to helping seniors live safely and independently in their own homes. As a second-career nurse, she brings extensive international health-care experience to her Canadian practice, having worked in various sectors, including multidisciplinary clinics, youth counseling, acute care, nursing homes, public health, and community health care. Dolkar is deeply aware of the global and local sociopolitical issues and social determinants affecting health, fueling her passion for community development and advocacy. A proud RNAO member and nurse leader, she has held multiple positions within the organization, including roles in various interest groups and serving as a Board Representative for Region 7. Her collaborative leadership style has fostered successful membership engagement. Dolkar’s nursing philosophy emphasizes client-centered care within the context of culture and environment, and her experiences as an immigrant, mother, and health-care provider inspire her to be a voice for nursing and empower others to do the same.

Ngawang Dolker grew up in Dharamsala, India. She immigrated to Minnesota where she embraced the cultural diversity of her new home while remaining deeply connected to her Tibetan heritage. Ngawang pursued her studies in Political Science, which laid the foundation for her career as an immigration lawyer. As part of her commitment to the Tibetan community, she served on the board of the MN Tibetan association for five years.

Ngawang was appointed to the board of the Council on Asian Pacific Minnesotans by the governor, where she works to amplify Asian Pacific Islander communities.

​ As a mother of three young children, she recognizes the urgent need to preserve Tibetan language and culture, motivating her involvement in the Tibetan Charter School project. As a founding member and co-chair, she is committed to creating an educational environment that fosters Tibetan identity and values for future generations.

Lawyer, Machik Weekend 2024's Registration Co-coordinator & Facilitator

Dechen is a Tibetan lawyer based in Toronto, Canada. She holds an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations from the University of Toronto and a Juris Doctor in Law from the University of Ottawa. With a strong interest and background in administrative law, social justice, and global affairs, Dechen was appointed a Governor in Council member of the Social Security Tribunal of Canada, as well as to the Refugee Appeal Division of the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada.  She is a founding member of a student-led national organization dedicated to supporting the Tibetan community. She has also held fellowships with various organizations that support Tibet. Most recently, she participated as a Machik Tibet GovLab fellow in the autonomous region of South Tyrol. Dechen is a past speaker at Machik Weekend and is delighted to be back.

Robert Egger is lifelong “power of food” champion, and the originator of the Community Kitchen movement. He launched the D.C. Central Kitchen, the Campus Kitchen Project, and the L.A. Kitchen, and is a Founding Board Member of The World Central Kitchen with Jose Andres, Collectively, these organizations have produced over 350 million meals and helped thousands of individuals attain self-sufficiency. Now a dedicated "elder ally", as well as a member of the recently launched State Department’s Culinary Corp, Robert makes himself available to entrepreneurs and leaders who long to make change in the boldest and most daring ways possible.

Artist and Educator

Gentsu Gyatso, also known as Bin Bai, is a Tibetan-born artist and educator with a Master's degree from the Sichuan Fine Art Institute. His work blends traditional and contemporary art through mixed media, including painting and installation. After founding Sayigemo Studio and creating the first Tibetan animated film, "The Hunter and the Skeleton," he gained global recognition. Now based in South Australia, he explores themes of first nation recognition and decolonization, inspired by local civil rights movements. He earned a second Master's in contemporary art from the University of South Australia, where his piece "Hi-vis Land" won an award. In 2022, he was shortlisted for the Floating Art Project and presented research on Tibetan art at an international seminar in Beijing. Currently, he’s working with Guildhouse and the Art Museum of Flinders University on The Disquiet project, merging activism with his artistic practice.

Her work predominantly features Tibetan themes, including custom paper dolls, portraits, earrings, and pins. Since childhood, she has cherished the art of handmade gifts, aiming to spread joy through her eco-friendly creations. Tenzin is grateful for the support she has received along her journey and accepts orders through her Instagram.

Tenzin Khangsar is a purpose-driven leader with a diverse background in the start-up, corporate, and non-profit sectors. Now 50 and a parent, he focuses on impactful change in affordable housing, motivated by his own refugee experience. He excels at building partnerships among various sectors to address challenges like housing and community development. Tenzin has co-founded two start-ups in video and influencer marketing and has held roles at Deloitte, Google, and the Government of Canada. A graduate of McGill University with a double major in International Business and Finance, he has received the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee for public service and was named one of Canada’s Top 40 under 40 for influencing foreign policy. Tenzin is also a dedicated father and husband, supporting his aspiring NBA son, future dermatologist daughter, and wife, a teacher for children with special needs.

Doctoral Candidate at Department of Religious Studies, UCSB

Michael Ium is currently a doctoral candidate in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara, as well as a postdoctoral fellow in the University of Toronto’s Department for the Study of Religion and Robert H.N. Ho Family Foundation Centre for Buddhist Studies.

​He is primarily a historian of religion with specialties in Tibet and South Asia. Under the guidance of his advisor José Cabezón, the focus of his dissertation is the early history of Ganden Monastery in Tibet and how that history impacted the construction of the Geluk tradition. He recently spent two years in Nepal and South India translating dozens of classical Tibetan texts related to his dissertation.

Sangmo Ta was born and grew up in Amdo Chapcha Tibet (Tsolu prefecture). She was a dancer/singer at Tsolu Dance Troupe for 6 years. Later, she worked as a choreographer and a book-keeper in a Tibetan middle school in Chapcha. In the early 1990s, Sang went to Northern India, Dharamsala. In 1996, Sang came to America as a translator and has remained in the United States since.  Sang completed her Bachelor's degree (B.A) in Psychology at Hunter College and completed her Master's Degree in Social Work (2009) at Hunter College. From 2009 to 2016, Sang has worked as a social worker in the Victim Services Unit of the Kings County District Attorney's Office. She specializes in domestic violence (DV) in the Eastern Asian population, and also works in Human Trafficking, Homicide, and Crimes Against Children offering cultural competent services and supportive counseling. Since May, 2016 to present, Sang works as a Real Estate salesperson at Douglas Elliman In New York.

Tenzin Phakdon is a Graduate Research Assistant at the Water Energy and Sustainable Technology Center and Sustainable Bioeconomy for Arid Regions (SBAR) fellow at University of Arizona. Born and raised in Bir, a Tibetan settlement in India. She has an undergraduate in Civil Engineering and a master’s in environmental engineering with scholarship from Tibetan Scholarship Program.

​Currently, pursuing doctoral degree in Environmental Engineering. Her research project includes electrochemically enhanced high efficiency reverse osmosis process for converting brackish water into potable water and engineering processes for treatment and disposal of waste brine produced in various membrane processes.

Sheila Regehr

Founder & Chair of Basic Income Canada Network

Sheila Regehr is a founding member of the Basic Income Canada Network, and its Chairperson since 2014. She is also a former Executive Director of the National Council of Welfare, an independent advisory body to the federal government that published the only comparative reports available on Canada’s 13 different social assistance systems, comprehensive poverty profiles, and analytic reports focused on solutions. It consulted across the country with governments and civil society from 2006 to 2012 as provinces, territories and municipalities were developing and undertaking poverty reduction strategies. Its last and most in-demand report was The Dollars and Sense of Solving Poverty.
​

Sheila’s 29-year career in the federal public service also spanned front-line work, policy analysis and development and senior management.  She was a Canadian negotiator at several United Nations world conferences on gender equality and social development, and chaired UN negotiations on poverty and on unpaid work. Her areas of policy expertise include income security and taxation, such as child tax benefits, the tax treatment of child support, the development of Economic Gender Equality Indicators in collaboration with Statistics Canada, maternity/parental benefits, pensions and social assistance. Sheila’s insight also comes from experiencing poverty herself as a young parent. ​

​​Tenzin Sedon is a documentary filmmaker based in Lhasa, where she founded the Dawn Independent Film Studio (2015-2023). In August 2023, she arrived in New York City to start the MFA program in Graduate Film Production at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts.

​Her current film project focuses on a mainland Tibetan middle school, “Gongkang Middle School,” which is located in Shanghai and is part of a unique schooling system designed for Tibetan minorities in major cities throughout China since 1989. The director herself attended the school at the age of twelve.

​In 2019, she returned to Shanghai and filmed at the school from 2019-2023. The film currently is in the post-production stage.

Heather Shaner, a feisty, blue-haired public defender in Washington, DC, has spent over 45 years representing people who can’t afford a lawyer. But her empathy is tested when a violent mob supporting outgoing President Donald Trump storms the U.S. Capitol. 

She is assigned to represent Jack Griffith, a social media influencer, and Annie Howell, a single mother and painter. As Heather gets to know her clients, she discovers Jack and Annie were deceived by misinformation and thought they’d joined a righteous defense of democracy, not an authoritarian wave. 

Public Defender explores the delicate state of U.S. democracy, the forces threatening to tear it apart, and the people dedicated to protecting it. Amidst a growing political divide, when trust is lost, the unlikely bonds between Heather and her clients reveal how people can rise above the fray to find each other’s humanity.

Inaugural Dr. Bettegowda Scholar 2023, Chief Medical Officer at Gaden Jangtse Charitable Hospital

Dr. Dhondup Tashi has been steadfast in dedicating his skills and acumen to the needs of underserved communities in rural areas. After serving the role of sole primary physician in a rural Indian community, Dr. Dhondup Tashi was called to serve as the Chief Medical Officer of Gaden Jangtse Charitable Hospital in Mundgod, Karnataka, which serves one of the largest Tibetan settlements across India. At Gajang Hospital, Dr. Dhondup Tashi has led the establishment of the state-of-the-art Gajang Medical  Center which now houses an endoscopy center, ultrasonography and fibroscan center, in addition to the first ever dialysis unit in the Tibetan community for patients with renal failures and the first ever real-time Hepatitis-B PCR laboratory in the Tibetan community.

Dr. Dhondup Tashi is the recipient of Inagural Dr. Bettegowda Scholar 2023 for his outstanding role as a public health figure for Tibetan communities in India and in the global diaspora during the COVID-19 crisis is a testament to the civic leadership role that he has passionately taken on.

Lawyer

Phil Trotter is a lawyer practicing in the fields of Canadian immigration and refugee law.
Raised in Quebec and trained at McGill, Phil began his law practice while developing a strong relationship to the Tibetan refugee community.

He is Chair of the Board of Directors of South Etobicoke Community Legal Services Legal Aid Clinic and Pro-Bono lawyer for Tibetan Canadian Cultural Center (2012 to present). Since 2019, his practice has been primarily focused on helping Tibetan refugee claims in Canada.

Youngdoung Tenzin, born in Kham Tsawa Pashoe, Tibet, moved to India at 12 for education. He excelled at Tibetan Children Village School and earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s in Chemistry. Tenzin conducted environmental research in Europe, receiving a research grant to study the Brahmaputra River's water quality. He relocated to Canada in 2019 and currently works as a science educator with Scientists in School. Tenzin actively promotes educational opportunities and community growth through his role as Executive Director of the Central Etobicoke Community Hub Initiative.​

Dr Tashi Rabgey is a Research Professor of International Affairs at the Elliott School, specializing in Tibet, China and the politics of statehood and governance. Through interdisciplinary research initiatives she has led on public policy and governance in Tibet, Professor Rabgey's work has enabled the development of new inquiries into the institutional structure and process of the People's Republic of China's policymaking in Tibet. She currently directs the Tibet Governance Lab and the Research Initiative on Multination States (RIMS) at George Washington University through which she has been developing comparative regional studies of the Basque Country, Kurdistan and other case studies of regional autonomy. Before joining the Elliott School, Tashi Rabgey was a lecturer in contemporary Tibetan studies at the University of Virginia where she was also co-director of the UVa Tibet Center. Committed life-long to community empowerment, she has traveled extensively to remote regions across Tibet over the past three decades. She holds a Ph.D. from Harvard University as well as law degrees from Oxford and Cambridge where she studied as a Rhodes scholar. She was a Fellow in the Public Intellectuals Program of the National Committee on US-China Relations from 2011-2013. Rabgey is currently Visiting Professor at the University of Kurdistan in the KRG (Kurdistan Region of Iraq).

Dr. Losang Rabgey
DR. LOSANG RABGEY

Born a Tibetan refugee in India and raised in Canada,  Dr Losang Rabgey is the first Tibetan with a PhD in Gender Anthropology. She is the first Tibetan Commonwealth Scholar and National Geographic Explorer. In 1998, she and her sister Dr Tashi Rabgey co-founded Machik with their parents as a nonprofit whose mission is to grow a global community committed to a stronger future for Tibet. In 20+ years, Machik has mentored and supported education for thousands of people in Tibet and in diaspora, mostly girls and women. Machik’s work currently centers on civic engagement, gender equity and social innovation. Programs include Machik Fest, a global platform for bridging global divides, Machik Gender Summit, Machik Khabda, and more. Machik also works with social innovators inside Tibet focused on education, film, conservation, health, etc. Dr Rabgey and her sister were recognized by Harvard University as Women Inspiring Change, along with others including Stacey Abrams, Justice Sonia Sotomayor, and Vice President Kamala Harris. Dr Rabgey and her family received the Meritorious Service Cross by the Governor-General of Canada.  She recently became member of the Explorers Club 50 and is a member of the Review Committee of the Explorers Club Discovery Expedition Grants. She is a frequent public speaker, including at Yale, Harvard, UC Santa Cruz, and the Nobel Peace Forum.
